Follow the label line before you search for the word

A label line can cross three parts of a machine and still point to only one. If you name the largest object, choose the nearest noun, or guess from general knowledge, you may produce a sensible answer for the wrong place. In IELTS reading diagram labelling, the tiny endpoint is the real question. This guide teaches you to identify that endpoint, define its visual zone and translate the picture into a precise text-search prompt before you scan the passage.
What diagram labelling asks you to do
Official IELTS guidance explains that you complete labels on a diagram based on a description in the passage. The picture may show a machine, part of a building or other information that can be represented visually. The instructions set the maximum number of words or numbers. If you exceed that limit, you lose the mark. The answers do not necessarily follow passage order, although they normally come from one section of the text.
This means the picture is not decoration. It reorganises prose into space. A sentence may say that air enters through a narrow opening below a filter; the diagram converts “enters”, “through” and “below” into an arrow and two positions. Your work is to reconnect spatial evidence with the passage’s language.
Shape evidence
Is the endpoint on a tube, chamber, blade, opening, surface or layer?
Position evidence
Is it above, inside, beneath, beside, around, between or at the base?
Function evidence
Does it carry, protect, support, collect, release, measure or separate?
The strongest prediction combines all three. “A component inside the upper chamber that filters dust” is much easier to locate than “part number 7”. You do not need specialist knowledge; the text supplies the information. The diagram helps you ask the right question of that text.
The endpoint rule
Before reading any words, trace each numbered label line from the blank to its exact endpoint. Do not stop where the line passes over another object. Decide whether it touches an object, a boundary, a cavity, a flow arrow or an area of material. If the drawing is crowded, cover the other lines with your finger or cursor and follow one at a time.
Now name the endpoint in ordinary language without trying to guess the official term: “thin layer around the outside”, “opening at the bottom”, “liquid inside the smaller tank”, or “moving part between two wheels”. This temporary description is your visual zone. It prevents you from choosing a passage noun that belongs to a neighbouring component.
A seven-step diagram reading method
- Read the instruction. Mark the source of answers and the exact word-and-number limit.
- Read the title and key. Identify what the picture represents and decode arrows, shading, section lines or symbols.
- Trace every endpoint. Number the visual zones and separate objects from spaces, layers and movements.
- Use known labels. They reveal terminology, orientation and the likely passage section.
- Predict the label. Combine shape, position, function and grammar into a short search prompt.
- Locate the description. Scan for a distinctive known label or process term, then read the full descriptive sentence group.
- Prove and audit. Match the exact endpoint, copy only permitted words, and check spelling and grammar.
This IELTS diagram labelling method deliberately separates orientation from vocabulary. Looking at the diagram first is not an invitation to guess technical names. It is how you decide what relationship the passage must describe.
Worked example: a rooftop rain collector
A compact rain collector is fixed beside a building’s drainpipe. Water first falls through a removable metal screen, which traps leaves before they enter the unit. Beneath the screen is a shallow diversion tray. The earliest rain, which may carry dust from the roof, runs across this tray and exits through a waste outlet on the left. Cleaner water arriving later spills over a raised lip into the main chamber. A floating ball rises with the stored water and eventually presses against the inlet, preventing the chamber from overflowing. Water for garden use leaves through a tap positioned just above the base, while sediment settles in the narrow sump below it.

Think-aloud answer analysis
1 screen. The endpoint is the top barrier and the printed words say it catches leaves. In the passage, the removable metal screen traps leaves. “Metal” describes the material, but the one-word label for the component is screen.
2 outlet. The left-pointing line identifies the exit for the earliest rain. The text calls it a waste outlet. Because only one word is allowed, outlet preserves the component; “waste” alone would describe its purpose but not name the thing.
3 ball. The endpoint is inside the main chamber, and the completed label already says “floating”. The passage explains that a floating ball rises and presses against the inlet. Copying “floating ball” would repeat a printed word and exceed the limit.
4 sump. The line touches the narrow space below the tap, where sediment settles. The passage names this space the sump. “Base” is nearby, but the sump lies below the tap and performs the collection function.
Near is not the same as correct
For blank 4, both base and sump appear in the same sentence. Only sump satisfies endpoint, position and function. This is why scanning for a nearby noun cannot replace visual proof.
Turn visual relationships into search language
Diagrams often remove the prepositions and verbs that make the passage easy to follow. Rebuild them. If a label points to a coating around a pipe, search for language meaning “covers”, “surrounds”, “outer layer” or “wrapped in”. If it points to an opening beneath a platform, expect “under”, “below”, “at the foot of”, “through” or “lower”.

Do not require exact positional vocabulary. “Mounted beneath the fan” may become “the fan sits above it” in the diagram. The relationship is identical even though the viewpoint reverses. Read enough context to identify both objects and their orientation.

Printed labels are valuable anchors. If the diagram already names a condenser, valve and storage tank, scan for the least common of those terms. When you locate it, read the surrounding paragraph rather than searching the whole passage separately for every blank. The relevant answers usually cluster within one descriptive section.
Known labels also establish orientation. A machine description may be written from input to output while blank numbers move clockwise around the drawing. Because official guidance does not promise answer order, let landmarks and spatial relationships determine where you read next.
Watch for reference chains: “this pipe”, “the lower vessel”, “the resulting vapour”, “a second opening”. The technical noun may appear in an earlier sentence, while the function that proves the label appears later. Follow the complete chain before selecting your word.
Six mistakes and their repairs
Naming the biggest shape
The line touches a small feature inside it. Repair: trace to the final pixel or point.
Using outside knowledge
A familiar machine suggests a label not stated in the text. Repair: treat the picture as location evidence, not a knowledge quiz.
Reading labels in number order
The passage describes parts in another sequence. Repair: scan from known landmarks and accept non-linear answer order.
Ignoring printed words
You repeat an adjective already beside the blank. Repair: insert the candidate and read the entire completed label.
Choosing a nearby noun
The word occurs in the right sentence but names the neighbour. Repair: demand shape, position and function proof.
Over-reading artistic detail
Shading may simply distinguish surfaces. Repair: use the diagram’s key and text evidence before assigning meaning.
These errors are especially common in IELTS diagram label completion because several plausible nouns may occur in one sentence. The endpoint rule makes the final distinction.
Guided practice: a passive cooling wall
The wall contains a vertical air channel behind its dark outer panel. Sunlight warms the panel, which transfers heat to air in the channel. The warmer air rises and escapes through a vent near the roof. This upward movement draws cooler indoor air into the channel through a lower grille. During winter, a sliding cover seals the upper vent so heated air is directed through an interior opening instead. A thin insulating board behind the channel prevents heat entering the building during very hot weather.

Answers and explanations
5 vent. It is the opening near the roof through which warm air escapes. 6 insulating. “Board” is printed, so the missing word describes the thin board behind the channel. 7 grille. The lower grille admits cooler indoor air. Notice that “channel” is near all three answers but labels the central space, not either opening.
Independent practice: a seed-cleaning drum
Harvested seed enters a slowly rotating drum through a hopper at its raised end. Large fragments remain on the first mesh while seeds fall through its openings. A finer screen beneath allows dust to escape but carries the seeds towards the lower end. There, a fan blows light husks sideways into a collection sack. The heavier clean seeds drop into a storage bin. A removable tray below the fine screen catches the dust, enabling workers to empty it without opening the drum.

Solve without opening the answers. Draw a dot at each imagined endpoint, describe its visual zone in five words, and underline the passage phrase that names both location and function.
Answers and evidence
8 hopper. It sits at the raised end and receives harvested seed. 9 fan. This component blows light husks sideways; “sack” is the destination, not the source of airflow. 10 tray. The printed word “removable” already appears in the passage description, so the one-word component is tray.
Timing and answer control
Spend a short setup period on the title, key, known labels and endpoints. Then locate one distinctive landmark in the passage and read the surrounding description closely. Answer connected labels together, moving between picture and text. This is usually faster than scanning the entire passage for each number.
If a label remains uncertain for more than a minute, write its predicted category—opening, substance, component, layer or movement—and continue. A later label may reveal the orientation. During review, trace each line again, check the candidate against its neighbour and count the words exactly. Keep the spelling from the passage when passage words are required.

Build the skill away from timed tests
After checking answers, classify mistakes as endpoint, orientation, relationship, location, paraphrase, grammar, copying or word limit. Redo only the failed step. For endpoint errors, hide the passage and describe what every line touches. For relationship errors, rewrite the evidence as “part + position + function”. For copying errors, read the completed label aloud.
Reverse the exercise with a labelled picture from a museum, university or government educational page. Write a short description without using the labels in picture order. A day later, cover the labels and recover them from your prose. This shows you how diagrams compress spatial relationships and why answer order may differ.
Maintain a relationship notebook rather than a simple vocabulary list. Record “outer coating → surrounds chamber”, “lower outlet → drains residue” and “central spindle → supports blades”. The verb and position make each technical noun memorable and useful.
