A line graph is not a collection of dots. It is a story of movement. Learn how to see that story, choose the evidence that matters and explain it in clear, accurate English.

Practise an IELTS line graph

If you want to know how to write an IELTS line graph report, this guide takes you from the first look at the axes to a finished four-paragraph answer. You will learn how to find the main trends, write a useful overview, group data, compare lines, choose accurate trend language and avoid the mistakes that make a report feel like a list of numbers.

Your mission

Show the reader what changed—and what mattered

In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, you may receive a graph, chart, table or diagram. For a line graph, the horizontal axis usually shows time and the vertical axis shows a value. One line may track a single subject. Several lines may compare countries, products, age groups or other categories. Your task is to summarise the visual information in your own words, select and report the main features, and make comparisons where they are relevant.

Official IELTS information says you should write at least 150 words and spend about 20 minutes on Task 1. Your answer must be connected prose, not notes or bullet points. It is assessed for Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. This means the examiner cares about what you select, how you organise it and how accurately you express it—not simply how many trend words you know.

The most important word in the instruction is summarise. A graph might contain twenty-five plotted values, but a good report does not need twenty-five separate statements. It identifies the big picture and supports it with a sensible selection of figures. Imagine you are explaining the graph to a friend who cannot see it. What would they need to understand the shape of the data? That is your mission.

Report what is visible

Overall direction, peaks, low points, periods of stability, turning points, crossings and important gaps.

Leave invention outside

Personal opinions, imagined reasons, recommendations and facts that the graph does not provide.

You also need to respect the unit. A value of 60 might mean 60 people, 60%, $60 million or 60 tonnes. Read the title, axes, legend, dates and any footnotes before deciding what the graph says. Beautiful grammar cannot fix a report about the wrong measurement.

Do not begin by searching for synonyms. First, decode the visual. Write five tiny notes on your question paper or in the planning area. These notes prevent common mistakes and make the introduction almost effortless.

Suppose a graph is titled “Daily journeys by three forms of transport, 2000–2020.” The lines show rail, bus and bicycle journeys, while the vertical axis is measured in thousands. Your notes might be: city journeys / rail-bus-bike / thousands / 2000–2020 / past. Now you know that “20” means 20,000 journeys and that the main detail verbs should normally be in the past tense.

Look closely at the axis scale. If it begins at 90 rather than zero, a move from 94 to 98 may look dramatic even though the numerical change is small. Describe the numbers, not the angle alone. Also check whether the final part of a line is a projection. A dotted forecast line calls for language such as is expected to or is projected to; it should not be reported as a completed fact.

Find the story hiding behind the dots

Start with the beginning and end of every line. This gives you the broad direction: upward, downward, stable or mixed. Then scan for events that change the story—a peak, a low point, a sharp movement, a long flat period, a reversal or a place where one line overtakes another.

Choose headlines, not a diary

A diary says, “In 2000 it was 20, in 2005 it was 24, in 2010 it was 29…” A headline says, “The figure rose steadily across the period.” The second sentence gives the reader a pattern. You can then use the starting and ending values to show the scale of that pattern. Intermediate data is useful when it marks a turning point or creates a comparison, but not simply because it exists.

For a graph with several lines, try giving each line a short label: steady rise, long decline, stable then surge, or wide fluctuation. Next, look for natural partners. Two lines that rise can be discussed together. Two lines that exchange positions belong in the same paragraph. A clear exception can be described after the main group. The graph decides the grouping; a memorised template does not.

Quick decision: which feature deserves the overview?

Imagine four lines rise gently, but a fifth doubles and becomes the highest. The shared rise is important, and the exceptional fifth line is also important. A useful overview would mention both: all categories increased, although one grew far more strongly and finished in first place. A one-point movement in the middle probably belongs nowhere.

Write an overview that actually informs

The overview is the reader’s map. It should state the most important patterns, usually without detailed figures. Official IELTS teaching guidance recommends giving the main trends or patterns in one or two sentences and then using body paragraphs to present the supporting data. A conclusion is not required for Task 1; if your overview is not near the beginning, it can appear at the end, but making it clear and easy to find is essential.

Weak

Overall, the lines changed in different ways over the period.

This could describe almost any graph. It names no real feature.
Useful

Overall, rail travel rose to become the leading mode, while bus use declined considerably. Bicycle journeys also increased, although they remained less common than rail.

This captures direction, final rank and the main contrast.

A useful overview often combines two types of information. First, it tells us about movement: which series rose, fell, fluctuated or stayed broadly stable. Second, it tells us about relationships: which finished highest, which was overtaken, whether the gap widened, or whether the lines moved closer together. You do not need every category if two statements can capture the whole graph, but you must not ignore an important exception.

What if there is no simple rise or fall?

Some graphs move up and down repeatedly. In that case, describe the range, the degree of fluctuation, the highest or lowest point, and where the line ends compared with where it began. Other graphs show cycles, long stability followed by sudden change, or lines that converge at the end. The overview should reflect the visual you have, not a sentence you memorised for an upward trend.

Keep figures out of the overview unless one number is necessary to express the main feature. “X was consistently the highest” is normally clearer than listing its value at four dates. Save representative numbers for the body, where they can prove the overview.

Every figure should answer a question. Does it show the starting gap? Prove the scale of a rise? Mark a peak? Confirm where two lines crossed? Establish the final ranking? If a number does none of these, it may be clutter.

Comparison

It overtook buses around 2012.

Notice how the numbers work inside a statement about change and relationship. A crowded alternative—20 in 2000, 25 in 2005, 31 in 2010, 38 in 2015 and 45 in 2020—forces the reader to discover the pattern alone. Select the starting value, ending value and perhaps the crossover because those are the figures that explain the story.

Use approximation honestly. If a point sits near 48, write about 48, approximately 48 or just under 50. Do not invent 48.3 when the graph cannot support that precision. Preserve the unit and avoid repeating it awkwardly after every value; establish it clearly, then use the figure, the proportion or the category name where the reference is obvious.

Two reliable ways to organise body paragraphs

Group by relationship: put lines with similar movements together, or place two lines that cross in one paragraph. This is often effective for multi-line graphs because comparison becomes natural. Group by time: describe an early phase and a later phase when several lines change direction around the same date. This can work well when the graph has a clear turning point. Avoid switching between these systems without a reason, because the reader may lose track.

There is no need to give every line the same number of words. The line with a dramatic reversal may deserve more attention than one that remains almost unchanged. Fair coverage means representing the important information accurately, not writing one mechanical sentence per category.

Language controls

Describe movement without making it bigger

Trend language has two jobs: name the direction and show the size or speed accurately. A small rise should not “rocket,” and a line that moves up and down should not be called stable. Clear everyday academic words are enough.

The small grammar that protects accuracy

To gives the new level: the rate rose to 60. By gives the size of the change: it rose by 20, from 40 to 60. At gives a level: it stood at 60. From…to… gives both endpoints. Mixing these prepositions can change the data even when the trend verb is correct.

Use past tense for a finished historical period: the figure fell. Use present tense to introduce the visual: the graph compares. For forecasts, use language that keeps the uncertainty: is predicted to rise or is projected to reach. If the graph includes both recorded and forecast data, make the change in time clear.

Vary grammar as well as vocabulary. “Rail use increased sharply” uses a verb and adverb. “There was a sharp increase in rail use” uses a noun phrase. Both are useful, but the grammar around the word must change. Do not write “there was an increase sharply.” You can also compare rates: “Cycling grew more gradually than rail travel.”

Your safest vocabulary rule

Use a word only when you understand its direction, strength, grammar and natural partners. “Rose sharply” is stronger writing than a rare word used incorrectly.

Worked control-room example

From visual signals to a complete report

Consider this invented practice graph. It shows daily journeys, in thousands, made by rail, bus and bicycle in one city from 2000 to 2020. Rail rises from 20 to 45. Bus falls from 42 to 25. Bicycle use grows from 10 to 24, with faster growth after 2010.

First, decide what deserves attention

The biggest story is the reversal between rail and bus travel. Rail starts at less than half the bus figure but becomes the leading mode. Bicycle use also rises and ends close to buses. These are overview ideas. The start and end values, together with the approximate crossover, can support them in the body.

Next, choose the paragraph logic

Rail and buses belong together because they move in opposite directions and exchange rank. Bicycle use can form the focus of the second detail paragraph, with a final comparison to buses. This grouping gives the reader relationships rather than three disconnected timelines.

Model response

The line graph compares the daily number of journeys made by rail, bus and bicycle in a city between 2000 and 2020, measured in thousands.

Overall, rail travel increased steadily and became the most widely used mode by the end of the period, whereas bus journeys declined considerably. Bicycle use also grew and finished at almost the same level as bus travel.

In 2000, buses accounted for 42,000 journeys per day, more than twice the rail figure of 20,000. Bus use then fell throughout most of the period. By contrast, the number of rail journeys climbed consistently, with rail overtaking buses around the middle of the timeframe. In 2020, the two figures stood at 45,000 and 25,000 respectively.

Bicycles were initially the least common choice, at only 10,000 journeys. Their use increased relatively slowly during the first decade before growing more noticeably after 2010. By the end of the period, bicycle journeys had reached 24,000, just below the bus total but still far lower than the figure for rail.

The introduction identifies the subject, unit and period. The overview states direction and final relationships without filling the sentence with data. The first body paragraph develops the central reversal; the second deals with the smaller series and connects it to the final bus value. No sentence invents a cause for the change.

Imagined explanation

Problem: “Rail rose because the city built better stations.”

Repair: remove the cause unless the task gives that information.

False strength

Problem: a rise from 48 to 50 “skyrocketed.”

Repair: say it increased slightly or remained broadly stable.

Broken mathematics

Problem: a move from 20 to 40 “rose by 200%.”

Repair: it doubled, rose by 20, or increased by 100%.

Prompt copied

Problem: the task sentence is repeated word for word.

Repair: change the sentence shape and a few safe terms while keeping the meaning.

Another common weakness is vague referencing. If you write “it increased” after mentioning three categories, the reader may not know what it means. Repeat the category or use a precise reference such as the rail figure. Clarity is more important than avoiding every repeated word.

Check comparisons carefully. Twice as high as, double, the majority and the highest have exact meanings. If the final values are 24 and 25, they are almost equal; one is not “far higher.” If three lines finish at 40, 50 and 60, the middle line is not the highest even if it rose the fastest. Direction, level and speed are different ideas.

Build confidence one decision at a time

Do not begin by writing a full report every day. Separate the skills. On one day, spend five minutes identifying overview features from three graphs. On another, practise grouping several lines. Next, write six accurate sentences using from, to, by and at. Then bring the skills together in a timed response.

A practical 20-minute routine is about three minutes for analysis and planning, fourteen minutes for writing, and three minutes for checking. This is teaching advice, not an official fixed rule. Adjust it during practice, but protect your planning time. Starting thirty seconds earlier does not help if you misunderstand the scale or miss the main reversal.

During the final check, underline your overview. Circle each number and ask what claim it supports. Check every occurrence of to and by. Confirm that your past and forecast verbs match the dates. Finally, look for one sentence that gives an opinion or cause; if the visual does not support it, remove it.
