Scanning for IELTS Reading
Your eyes find the word water, but the question asks why the supply became unreliable—and water appears twelve times. This is the trap behind weak scanning in IELTS reading: searching for a common word without knowing what evidence should look like. Here you will learn to build a search signature, locate the right evidence zone, and switch to careful reading before speed destroys accuracy.
What scanning actually does
Scanning is a targeted search for specific information. British Council IELTS guidance recommends identifying what you need first, looking for distinctive words such as names, dates, numbers or technical terms, and then reading the surrounding text once you locate the clue. That last step matters: scanning finds an address; it does not tell you what happens inside the building.
A useful IELTS scanning technique begins with the question rather than the passage. You predict the answer shape, choose a stable visual clue, anticipate a paraphrase, and use your broad passage map to choose a likely sector. Only then do you search. This makes the movement purposeful.
Scanning is not ordinary fast reading. When you read, your eyes follow sentences to build meaning. When you scan, they jump over most language while looking for a preselected signal. The moment the signal appears, scanning must stop and close reading must begin.
Do not confuse the three reading modes
Skimming
Collects overall subject, paragraph purpose and text organisation.
Question: What is this section doing?
Scanning
Locates a name, number, concept or likely paraphrase.
Question: Where is the evidence?
Close reading
Tests the precise claim, relationship, condition and degree.
Question: What does it prove?
Imagine a passage mapped as history → present problem → two solutions → evaluation. A question asks which material reduced noise in the second solution. The map sends you to the solution sector; scanning locates noise or a synonym; close reading identifies the material and checks whether it reduced noise rather than merely being tested.
The four-part search signature
When learners ask how to scan IELTS reading, “look for keywords” is not enough. Build a four-part description before searching.
- Predict the answer shape. Do you need a year, person, location, reason, material, stage or opinion? Grammar and instructions provide clues.
- Select one stable clue. Proper nouns, dates, capital letters, units, abbreviations and technical terms are less likely to change.
- Add one meaning clue. Predict how an ordinary word may be paraphrased: declined might become fell; main cause might become primarily due to.
- Choose a sector. Use headings, paragraph labels and question order to decide where to begin. Do not sweep the whole passage if the map points to two paragraphs.

Stable clues and changeable clues
Stable clues retain their appearance. A surname, 17%, 1996, CO₂, £4.50 or Azolla filiculoides can stand out on the page. Changeable clues carry meaning but may be rewritten. Residents objected might appear as the proposal met local opposition. Good scanning pairs the two.
Common nouns are often poor anchors. If a passage concerns forests, searching only for trees produces too many matches. Pair it with the requested relationship: trees + prevented erosion, then look for roots stabilised the soil. The stable clue narrows the field; the meaning clue confirms relevance.
When no visual anchor exists, scan conceptually. Move through likely sectors looking for paraphrase families, not one exact word. For why the plan failed, your family might include because, prevented, obstacle, shortage, proved impractical. Concept scanning is slower, so a useful paragraph map becomes more valuable.
Worked evidence trail: find, stop, prove
In 2016, the town of Alderwick installed sensors beside eight public fountains to measure water use. The first devices sent readings once a day, which was too infrequent to reveal short leaks. Engineer Lila Omari redesigned the system so that it reported every fifteen minutes. During a summer trial, the new devices detected six damaged valves within hours. However, frequent transmission drained batteries quickly in shaded locations, where solar charging was weak. The council therefore retained daily reporting at two shaded fountains and used the faster schedule elsewhere.

Question 1: The predicted shape is a year. The digits 2016 are visually distinctive. Stop there and confirm that “installed sensors” means monitoring began. Answer: 2016.
Question 2: The shape is a person; capital letters guide you to Lila Omari. The verb redesigned confirms she changed the system. Answer: Lila Omari.
Question 3: Original schedule is paraphrased as first devices sent readings once a day. Read the full clause after it: this was too infrequent to reveal short leaks. Answer: it could not reveal short leaks.
Question 4: shaded is stable and appears once. The evidence says batteries drained quickly because solar charging was weak. If the question asks for the problem, answer rapid battery drain, not shade itself.
Question 5: Scanning to every fifteen minutes could tempt you to say Yes. The final sentence limits that decision: two shaded fountains kept daily reporting. Answer: No. Location is not proof.
Train the find-stop-prove sequence with new evidence trailsHow your eyes should move
Before moving, hold the signature in working memory. Then let your gaze travel down the centre of a column or in short horizontal sweeps, noticing shapes rather than pronouncing sentences. On paper, a finger or pencil can guide the line if permitted by your test format; on screen, use the visual line and scroll deliberately. Do not zigzag randomly.
Search one anchor at a time. If you try to hold six synonyms, three names and an answer shape together, attention becomes noisy. Start with the rarest stable clue. When it appears, widen to the sentence and its neighbours. If the meaning clue is absent, continue to the next occurrence.
Use a stopping rule: a match must contain both the anchor and the requested relationship. Seeing the name is not enough. Seeing the idea is not enough if it refers to a different person or period. Stop only when the pair overlaps.
Paraphrase changes what you search for
Question: a fall in demand
Passage: purchases declined
Question: the experiment began
Passage: researchers launched the trial
Question: residents were worried
Passage: the proposal caused local concern
Question: was the principal reason
Passage: was primarily attributed to
These are not simply synonym swaps. A noun may become a verb, an active sentence may become passive, or cause and result may reverse grammatical positions. Preserve the relationship while predicting alternatives.
Beware of attractive partial matches. Cheap to install does not equal inexpensive to maintain. The first successful trial does not necessarily mean the first trial. Once scanning locates overlapping vocabulary, close reading must check actor, action, object, time and degree.
Use question order carefully
Several IELTS Reading task types present answers in passage order, while others do not. Official format pages explain ordering for particular tasks, so learn the rule for the question type rather than assuming every set behaves alike. When order applies, the previous answer creates a lower boundary and the next known answer creates an upper boundary.
For ordered short-answer or completion items, if question 7 was proved in paragraph B, begin question 8 from that area rather than returning automatically to the title. For Matching Information, information can be distributed differently and a paragraph may be used more than once when instructions allow; depend on the task instructions, not a habit.
Question order narrows a search, but it never changes the text's meaning. If you find a tempting phrase outside the predicted sector, verify it instead of rejecting it mechanically.
Choose scanning by question type
Short answers
Short-Answer Questions benefit from answer-shape prediction and distinctive anchors, followed by exact word-limit checking.
True/False/Not Given
Scan for the subject and relationship, then compare the whole claim. True/False/Not Given cannot be solved by keyword overlap.
Completions
Grammar predicts noun, verb or number. Scan for nearby concepts, then copy an exact form that fits both passage and sentence.
Matching features
Names can be strong anchors, but repeated names require meaning clues and careful attribution.
Six scanning failures and their repairs
The anchor appears everywhere
Repair: replace the topic noun with a rarer neighbour, a number, name or relationship.
You demand an exact keyword
Repair: generate a small paraphrase family before searching.
You keep racing after a match
Repair: physically pause. Read the complete sentence and one sentence on either side.
You answer from the anchor
Repair: identify what the question asks—cause, result, date, object or opinion—and extract that element.
You restart at the beginning
Repair: use the passage map and any valid ordering to choose a narrower sector.
You confuse recognition with evidence
Repair: state the exact words that prove or contradict the answer before committing.
Guided practice: write the signature first
Architect Niko Reyes first proposed clay cooling panels in 2012. Unlike solid tiles, the panels contained narrow internal channels. Water moving through them evaporated slowly and lowered the surrounding air temperature. A school in Meriton tested fifty panels in an open courtyard, but mineral deposits blocked several channels after four months. The research team replaced tap water with collected rainwater, which contained fewer dissolved minerals. Blockages became less frequent, although the system still required monthly inspection. Electricity use in adjacent classrooms fell by 11% during the warmest term, but researchers cautioned that open windows may also have contributed.

Independent practice: detect the decoy
Two surveys examined why commuters avoided the Riverline ferry. The 2019 survey highlighted ticket price, and the operator introduced a cheaper weekly pass. Passenger numbers barely changed. A second survey in 2021 included people who had never used the ferry. Most said the final evening departure was too early for their work schedules. The operator moved it from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.; weekday use then rose sharply, despite a small fare increase the following spring.
Question: What change was followed by a sharp rise in weekday use?
Before looking back, write: answer shape, stable clue, meaning clue and likely sector. Then find the evidence. Explain why cheaper weekly pass is a decoy.
Model answer
Shape: a change. Stable clue: times 6:30 and 8:00 p.m. or weekday. Meaning clue: sharp rise → rose sharply. Sector: result of the second survey. Answer: moving the final departure from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. The cheaper pass is a decoy because it was followed by almost no change; matching the broad topic of improvement is not enough.
Train accuracy before raw speed
Choose an unfamiliar article and write five search prompts: a date, person, cause, comparison and qualification. Build a signature for each. Time only the location stage, then remove the timer and prove the answer. Record false stops—places where an anchor appeared without the required relationship.
Your practice log should contain the question, stable clue, predicted paraphrase, evidence line, false-stop reason and final answer. If you repeatedly choose common anchors, train distinctiveness. If you locate correctly but answer wrongly, train close reading. If paraphrases hide the evidence, practise word-family and grammatical transformations.
Speed should arrive as unnecessary searching disappears. A reliable scanning reading strategy measures accurate evidence locations, not how dramatically your eyes move.
