One task, more than one source
What an IELTS mixed-chart task asks you to do
A mixed-chart task presents two or more related visuals. You might see a bar chart with a line graph, a pie chart with a table, or two charts using different measures. Your job is to summarise the important features across the complete task, support them with selected evidence and make relevant comparisons. You are writing one integrated report, not two unrelated mini-reports.
Official British Council guidance includes combinations among the visual types that can appear in Academic Task 1. It advises that when more than one visual is presented, the overview should highlight the main trends or changes in both and make general comparisons. The standard Task 1 requirements still apply: write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes, use connected academic or neutral prose, select the main features and avoid personal opinion.
The difficulty is not simply that there are more numbers. Each visual may use different units, dates, categories or scales. A line graph might show visitor numbers over ten years while a pie chart shows why visitors travelled in the final year. The visuals share a topic but answer different questions. Your report must respect those differences while explaining the strongest relationship available.
Connect the visuals through their shared subject, time or categories only when the evidence supports the link. If one chart cannot explain the other, report the principal feature of each and compare cautiously.
Mixed charts versus multiple charts
“Mixed charts” often means different visual formats in one task, such as a table and bar chart. The same method also helps with two graphs of the same format. What matters is that several sources contribute to one response. Inspect every title and unit before assuming they measure the same thing.
Do not give each visual equal space automatically. A simple pie chart may contain one dominant fact, while a time-series table may require several comparisons. Coverage should be proportionate to the meaningful information, though no visual should disappear from the overview or details.
Read before comparing
Decode every visual independently
Begin with a quick inventory. For each visual, write what it measures, the unit, categories, location and period. Note whether it shows change over time, composition at one point, ranking, totals, averages or a process. This prevents a percentage from being compared directly with a count or an annual figure with a cumulative total.

Read axes from their origins. A truncated vertical axis can make a small difference look dramatic. Check whether figures are in thousands or millions and whether percentages sum to a whole. Look for notes such as “per household,” “among respondents,” “projected” or “excluding tax.” These qualifiers determine the meaning of every comparison.
Create a two-line summary
Before linking the visuals, write one short planning sentence for each. For example: “Chart A: overall participation rose, led by the youngest group.” “Chart B: cost was the main barrier in the final year.” These sentences help you preserve the main feature of both sources even if no direct relationship exists.
Then identify repeated categories. If the same four countries appear in both visuals, compare their rankings. If only one year overlaps, use that year as a bridge. If a pie chart breaks down the final total from a line graph, state that relationship accurately rather than treating the percentage slices as additional totals.
Build the shared story
Find relationships without overclaiming
The strongest mixed-chart reports usually identify a shared pattern: a category leads in both measures, growth coincides with a changing composition, or a high total contrasts with a low rate. Yet visual association does not prove cause. If sales and advertising both rise, the charts show parallel movement, not necessarily that advertising caused the sales increase.
Matching rank
The same category is highest or lowest in both visuals. This supports a direct comparative overview.
Contrasting rank
A category leads in absolute numbers but not in percentage terms. The contrast may be the most useful relationship.
Part and whole
One visual shows a total while another divides that total by type, age or purpose. Keep the measures distinct.
Time and snapshot
One visual shows a trend and another explains the composition at one selected date. Use the shared date as the bridge.
Input and result
One source presents resources and another outcomes. Compare observable patterns without inventing causality.
No strong relationship
The visuals share a topic but measure separate aspects. Give each a clear main feature and connect them only at a general level.
Absolute and relative values
A common trap is comparing totals with percentages. A country can have the largest number of users but a lower participation rate because its population is larger. Write “Country A recorded the highest user total, whereas Country B had the greatest proportion” rather than saying the figures contradict each other.
Likewise, percentage change differs from percentage-point change. If a rate rises from 20% to 30%, it increases by 10 percentage points and by 50% relative to the original level. Use the direct figures unless a calculation genuinely improves the comparison.
When dates differ, avoid claiming simultaneity. If one chart ends in 2020 and the second begins in 2021, you can describe consecutive periods but not state that both features occurred “at the same time.”
A repeatable workflow
Plan a mixed-chart response in six steps
- Decode each source.
Identify subject, unit, categories, dates, scale and visual purpose separately.
- Find each main feature.
Mark the dominant trend, leader, low point, major contrast or exception in every visual.
- Test the relationship.
Look for shared categories, matching dates, rank patterns, part-whole relationships and meaningful contrasts.
- Design one overview.
Combine the principal feature of both visuals and state the strongest supported relationship without detailed numbers.
- Choose detail groups.
Organise by shared category, time, theme or visual, selecting evidence from both sources where it improves clarity.
- Draft and audit.
Write the introduction, overview and details, then verify units, dates, totals, calculations and every comparative word.
A practical personal timing plan is about four minutes for analysis, thirteen minutes for writing and three minutes for checking. This is preparation advice rather than an official rule. Mixed visuals reward careful planning because correcting a unit error after drafting can require rewriting several sentences.
Choose the paragraph structure after analysis
Visual-by-visual structure is safest when the sources measure different things: detail paragraph one explains Visual A and paragraph two explains Visual B, with cross-references where helpful. An integrated structure is stronger when the same categories or dates appear in both sources. Each paragraph can cover a group and draw evidence from both.
A hybrid structure often works well. Begin the first detail paragraph with the main time trend, then connect the final year to the second visual. Use the second paragraph for the remaining composition or category comparisons. The reader should never have to guess which chart or unit a figure belongs to.
Unify the big picture
Write one overview for the complete task
Your overview should acknowledge all visuals and explain their most important findings. It can use two sentences: one for the dominant trend or ranking, and one for the relationship or second visual. It does not need every category, date or exact figure.
Overall, the line graph changed over time and the pie chart had several different categories.
This describes the formats rather than the information and gives no usable comparison.Overall, total rail journeys rose substantially despite a brief mid-period decline. By the final year, commuting accounted for the largest share of trips, while leisure travel represented the smallest proportion.
This reports the principal trend and connects the final-year composition without mixing totals and percentages.If the sources permit a direct relationship, make it visible: “Overall, the two countries with the highest health spending also recorded the longest life expectancy, whereas Country D ranked lowest on both measures.” This is a supported association. Do not add that expenditure produced longer life unless the task demonstrates causation.
Overview when patterns conflict
Contradiction can be the shared story. “Overall, City A handled the greatest number of passengers, although City C had the highest proportion of international travellers.” This contrast shows that you understood absolute and relative measures.
If there is no meaningful cross-visual pattern, place the main feature of each in adjacent sentences. Integration comes from coherent organisation, not a forced claim. The task remains complete when both visuals are summarised accurately and their common topic is clear.
Select evidence strategically
Group details across visuals
When the same categories appear, grouping by rank is efficient. One paragraph can compare leading categories across both visuals, while the second covers lower performers and exceptions. Use representative data from each source to support the grouping.
When one source is time-based, chronological grouping may be clearer. Describe the early and late trend, then use the snapshot visual to explain the final composition. Avoid inserting pie-chart percentages into the middle of a year-by-year line description without signalling the change in measure.
Use bridge sentences
A bridge tells the reader why you move to the second source: “The table provides further detail for 2025, the final year shown in the line graph.” Another useful form is: “Although Northland led in total production, the accompanying chart shows that Eastland exported the largest share of its output.”
Repeat units when ambiguity is possible. After a sentence with millions of dollars, “the figure was 42%” is clear, but “the figure was 42” may not be. State “42% of revenue” or “42 million dollars” when changing measures.
Select values that demonstrate highs, lows, changes, similarities and exceptions. Do not reproduce every cell simply because there are two visuals. If ten categories share the same broad pattern, describe the group and use two examples. Give precise data where it proves the relationship.
Balance coverage
Check that the simpler visual appears in both the overview and details. A pie chart with four slices may need only two sentences, but omitting it makes the response incomplete. Conversely, do not devote half the report to minor slices just to create equal length.
Identify the main feature of each source, then decide whether the evidence supports a direct connection.
Keep measures distinct

Use nouns that match the measure
Use number for countable items or people, amount for uncountable quantities, proportion or percentage for relative values, and rate when the visual presents a rate. “The amount of students” is normally inaccurate; write “the number of students.”
Reference words require care. “This figure” should point to one unmistakable value. If a sentence mentions a total, rate and year, repeat the noun: “This participation rate” or “the 2024 total.” Clear repetition is better than elegant ambiguity.
Compare comparable values
Use “higher than” for the same measure and unit. If one visual uses dollars and another uses percentages, describe rank or association rather than saying one number is higher. “Spending was highest in A, which also had the largest market share” is valid; “$80 million was higher than 45%” is meaningless.
Match tense to dates and status. Historical data take past forms, present characteristics may use present tense and projections need future or cautious forms. Different visuals can require different tenses within the same report.
Worked reasoning
From two visuals to one clear report
Imagine an original practice task with a line graph showing annual visits to Greenport Museum from 2015 to 2025 and a pie chart showing visitor purpose in 2025. Visits rise from 400,000 in 2015 to 520,000 in 2018, fall to 460,000 in 2020 and then climb to 700,000 by 2025. In the final year, school trips account for 40% of visits, general tourism 30%, local leisure 20% and research 10%.
Identify the relationship
The line graph gives the time trend; the pie chart divides the final-year total. The overview should state the overall growth, temporary decline and dominant final purpose. Detail paragraph one can explain the trend with selected values. Paragraph two can break down 2025 and convert percentages into approximate numbers only if useful and calculated accurately.
Example response
The line graph illustrates the number of annual visits to Greenport Museum between 2015 and 2025, while the pie chart shows the purposes of visits in the final year.
Overall, museum attendance increased considerably across the period despite a temporary decline around 2020. In 2025, school trips formed the largest visitor group, whereas research accounted for the smallest share.
Annual visits stood at 400,000 in 2015 and rose steadily to 520,000 by 2018. Attendance then fell to 460,000 in 2020. This decline was subsequently reversed, with the total climbing sharply over the next five years to reach a period high of 700,000 in 2025, 300,000 above the initial figure.
The accompanying pie chart divides that final-year total by purpose. School groups represented 40% of all visits, equivalent to about 280,000 people. General tourists made up a further 30%, while local leisure visitors accounted for one fifth. Research was the least common purpose at 10%, or approximately 70,000 visits.
This invented example is not an official IELTS question or model answer. It demonstrates accurate integration. The introduction names both visuals and their relationship. The overview covers both. The first detail paragraph uses the line graph’s unit, while the second signals the pie chart’s percentages.
Check calculated values
Forty percent of 700,000 is 280,000, and ten percent is 70,000. These conversions are valid because the pie chart explicitly divides the 2025 total. They are optional: the report would remain complete using percentages alone. Never convert shares when the pie chart population does not match the total in the other visual.
The response does not claim that school trips caused the attendance increase. The charts show final composition, not the historical growth of each visitor purpose. This boundary between evidence and speculation is essential.

Writing two separate reports
Use one introduction and one overview, then connect the visuals through shared dates, categories or themes.
Ignoring the smaller visual
Every source needs a main feature in the overview and relevant evidence in the details.
Mixing units
Counts, money, rates and percentages cannot be compared directly. Repeat units when the measure changes.
Forcing causation
Parallel patterns show association, not proof that one measure caused the other.
Comparing different dates
Use a shared or clearly signalled year. Do not describe non-overlapping data as simultaneous.
Reporting every value
Select evidence that proves the overview; mixed visuals still require a summary, not an inventory.
Another error is using a chart-type template rather than reading the task. A phrase designed for a line graph may not suit a static table. Decide what each visual communicates, then choose vocabulary for trend, composition, ranking or process accordingly.
Do not assume that matching colours represent the same category unless the legend confirms it. Separate visuals can reuse colours differently. Read labels rather than relying on visual appearance.
Finally, avoid an introduction that describes only one source. A concise form is: “The bar chart compares X, while the table provides information about Y.” Include place, period and unit where needed, but save findings for the overview.
