If you searched for a simple way to write about pie charts in IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, the central answer is this: compare proportions instead of listing percentages. A pie chart shows how a complete total is divided. Your report should help the reader see which parts dominate, which are similar, which are small and, when several charts are shown, how the composition changes.
You do not need advanced mathematics. You need careful reading, sensible selection and clear English. This lesson takes you from the first look at a chart to a complete response, with an original example, corrections and practice activities you can use straight away.
Official IELTS guidance says that Academic Task 1 may contain a graph, table, chart or diagram. You should write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes, using full, connected sentences. Task 2 carries twice as much weight, so a focused response is better than a long report that steals time from your essay.
Begin with meaning
How to read an IELTS pie chart
Before looking at individual percentages, read the title, labels, dates and unit. Ask what the complete circle represents. It could be all household spending, every journey made by a group, the total energy produced in a country or the responses to a survey. A slice only makes sense in relation to that total.
Identify the whole
Complete this sentence: “The chart divides the total _____ into _____ categories.” If you cannot complete it accurately, read the title again.
Check the moment
Is this one place in one year, several groups at the same time, or the same group in different years? This decides whether you describe static differences or change.
Read every label
Notice percentages, raw numbers, currencies and notes. Check whether the categories and units are the same across all charts.
Percentages and real quantities are not the same
Imagine that 20% of 1,000 commuters cycle in Town A, while 20% of 10,000 commuters cycle in Town B. The slices are equal as proportions, but Town B has ten times as many cyclists. Unless the total numbers are supplied, do not claim that the absolute quantities are equal.
This distinction also matters when a share falls. A category can represent a smaller percentage of a growing total while its actual quantity increases. Pie charts normally allow you to report proportions safely. Move into absolute numbers only when the chart provides the total and the calculation is genuinely useful.
Compare a percentage with another percentage. Compare a number with another number. Never quietly move from one measure to the other.
Static and time-based pie charts
A static task shows one moment. It may compare different countries, age groups or purposes, but it does not show movement through time. Use language such as was larger than, accounted for and was similar to. A time-based task shows the same distribution in two or more years. You can then use rose, fell, remained stable and overtook.
Two charts do not automatically create a trend. If one chart represents adults and another represents children in the same year, nothing increased or decreased. The groups are different, not earlier and later versions of the same group.
See relationships
How to find the key features
The task instruction asks you to select and report the main features and make relevant comparisons. That means you should not describe every slice with equal attention. Look first for the structure of the distribution.
Start with ranking. Mark the biggest and smallest slices. Then compare the gaps. A leading category at 31% is not dominant when the next two stand at 29% and 27%. By contrast, a 55% slice clearly accounts for more than all the small categories individually and perhaps more than several of them together.
Next, look for useful totals. If rent is 35% and food is 25%, these two essentials make up 60% altogether. That combined figure may reveal the main story more clearly than two separate sentences. Only add categories when the combination has a meaningful reason and the arithmetic is correct.
Percentage points: a small phrase that prevents a big error
If a share changes from 20% to 30%, it rises by 10 percentage points. Its relative increase is 50%, because 10 is half of the original 20. In most IELTS reports, “rose by 10 percentage points” is the clearest description. Saying “rose by 10%” communicates a different calculation.
Correct: The share rose by 10 percentage points, from 20% to 30%.
Choose, do not collect
A useful planning note might contain only six items: the leader, the smallest slice, the strongest pair, the biggest change, one stable category and one unusual contrast. You may later use other figures, but these six items give the report a clear direction. If your notes simply copy every number around the circle, you have not yet analysed the chart.

How to write a useful overview
An overview gives the reader the main picture before the detailed evidence. British Council guidance highlights the importance of summarising the main trend or feature, and IDP guidance advises including one overview. For a pie chart, this normally means identifying the dominant and minor categories, major similarities or the most important shift in composition.
Overall, there were several differences between the categories, and the percentages changed over time.
The sentence says almost nothing. It does not name a leader, a direction or a meaningful contrast.Overall, housing remained the largest expense despite losing part of its share, while transport and leisure became considerably more important. Spending was therefore more evenly distributed in the later year.
The reader can understand the main story before seeing the detailed figures.The improved version identifies a continuing leader, reports the direction of the important changes and explains what those changes mean for the overall distribution. It avoids a list of exact percentages, leaving those for the detail paragraphs.
Overview ideas for different tasks
- One pie chart: name the largest and smallest shares, plus an important grouping or similarity.
- Several places or groups: compare the main category in each and identify the strongest cross-group difference.
- Several years: report the biggest gains and losses, stable shares and any changed ranking.
- A pie chart with another visual: cover the principal feature of both visuals without confusing their units.
You can place the overview after the introduction or after the details. Many learners find it easier to put it directly after the introduction because it guides the rest of the report. Wherever you place it, write one clear overview rather than repeating the same summary as a conclusion.
Do not explain causes that the chart does not show. If the share of public transport grew, you cannot say this happened because fuel became expensive unless the task provides that information. Your job is to describe the evidence, not invent a story behind it.
Build readable paragraphs
How to organise your pie-chart report
A reliable report usually contains a short introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. This is not a fixed template that decides what you say. The chart itself should decide how the details are grouped.
Paraphrase what the chart or charts show: subject, place, group, time and unit.
State the dominant relationships and broad changes without a full list of data.
Explain one meaningful group, such as the largest shares or the categories that fell.
Cover the contrasting group, smaller shares, increases, stability or exceptions.
For a single chart, you might group the larger slices in one paragraph and the smaller ones in another. For charts from two years, grouping by direction is often clearer: categories that fell in one paragraph, then those that rose or stayed stable in the other. For several countries, you might compare the leading categories first and then the remaining contrasts.
Avoid “chart one, then chart two” when it hides comparisons
Suppose two pie charts show the same five expenses in 2000 and 2025. Describing all of 2000 and then all of 2025 makes the reader remember the first list while reading the second. Grouping housing and food across both years creates an immediate comparison. A second paragraph can then compare transport, leisure and other costs.
However, separate-chart paragraphs can work when the categories are completely different or the two distributions have little direct overlap. Organisation should reduce the reader’s effort. Ask: “Which two or three facts naturally belong in the same sentence?”
Choose the main relationship first, then support it with carefully selected percentages.
Use precise everyday English
Useful language for pie charts
Strong Task 1 language is accurate before it is impressive. Learn a small set of flexible structures and use them correctly. You do not need a different synonym for every percentage.

Fractions can make comparisons easy to read
Use half for 50%, a quarter for 25%, three quarters for 75%, and a third only when the value is close to 33%. Say nearly a third for 31% or just over a third for 35%. Do not turn 40% into “almost half”; the approximation is too loose when the exact figure is available.
Grammar that stays accurate
The percentage of commuters who cycled increased is correct because the subject is the singular noun percentage. Commuters who cycled increased may wrongly suggest that the people themselves became larger. Name the measured quantity clearly.
Use respectively only when two ordered lists match without effort: “Housing and food accounted for 40% and 25%, respectively.” With three or four categories, separate sentences are often clearer. Also remember the difference between rose to 30% (the final value) and rose by 10 percentage points (the amount of change).

Imagine two pie charts showing how households in a town divided their spending in 2000 and 2025. The figures are:

What matters most?
Housing remains the largest category, but its share falls. Food also declines. Transport and leisure grow strongly; transport becomes equal to food. “Other” changes only slightly. Together, housing and food fall from 70% to 54%, so the later distribution is less concentrated in these two essentials.
Notice what we did not put in the overview: every exact value. Instead, we used the data to discover a clear change in composition. The details can now prove that story.
The two pie charts compare the proportions of household expenditure allocated to five categories in a town in 2000 and 2025.
Overall, housing remained the largest expense despite a noticeable fall in its share. Food also became less prominent, whereas transport and leisure accounted for much greater proportions in 2025. As a result, spending was more evenly distributed in the later year.
In 2000, housing made up 40% of total expenditure, while food represented a further 30%. Their combined share was therefore 70%. By 2025, these figures had declined to 32% and 22%, respectively. Although housing still ranked first, food was no longer clearly the second-largest item.
Transport rose by 10 percentage points, from 12% to 22%, making it equal to food in 2025. Leisure doubled from 8% to 16%. By contrast, other costs changed only slightly, falling from 10% to 8%, and remained the smallest category at the end of the period.
Why the response works
The introduction identifies the visual, subject, categories and dates. The overview explains the lasting leader, the main directions and the broader shift. The first detail paragraph groups the two declining major expenses. The second groups the growing categories and finishes with the small exception. Every number supports a comparison.

Common pie-chart mistakes and how to fix them
Writing a percentage list
Problem: Every sentence reports one category, so the reader cannot see the important relationships.
Fix: Group categories and use comparisons: “Housing and food together accounted for 70%, far more than the remaining items combined.”
Missing the overview
Problem: The report contains numbers but never communicates the main picture.
Fix: State the leader, the broad contrasts and the most important change in one or two overview sentences.
Using change language for static charts
Problem: “Cycling increased in France” is used when France and Germany are compared in the same year.
Fix: Write “Cycling had a larger share in France than in Germany.”
Confusing percent with percentage points
Problem: A move from 20% to 30% is called a rise of 10%.
Fix: Say it rose by 10 percentage points or rose from 20% to 30%.
Assuming identical totals
Problem: Equal slices are described as equal numbers even though the chart totals are unknown.
Fix: Compare the shares only, unless absolute totals are supplied.
Inventing explanations
Problem: The writer guesses why spending or behaviour changed.
Fix: Report only visible information. Task 1 tests description and comparison, not opinion.
Other avoidable problems include copying long phrases from the task, writing below 150 words, using bullet points in the exam answer and spending so long on Task 1 that Task 2 is rushed. Official scoring considers Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Clear selection, logical grouping and dependable sentences support all four areas.

A short practice lesson you can repeat
Use any pie-chart task and work through these activities. Do them slowly at first. Speed comes after the decisions become familiar.
- Read for 60 seconds
Write the whole, categories, place or group, date and unit. Mark whether the comparison is static or time-based.
- Choose six observations
Find the largest, smallest, closest pair, useful combination, biggest contrast and—if time is present—largest change.
- Write only the overview
Use one or two sentences. Then cover the chart and ask whether the sentences still communicate its main story.
- Plan two detail groups
Put each selected figure into a group. If a number does not support either group, question whether you need it.
- Write for 14 minutes
Produce connected paragraphs. Keep language simple enough to control while making comparisons clear.
- Check for three minutes
Verify category, date, percentage, tense, subject–verb agreement, word count and every “by” or “to” phrase.
Three questions for self-correction
Have I described the whole, not just individual slices?
Your overview should explain the general distribution or its main change. At least some detail sentences should compare or combine categories.
Can every claim be proved by the chart?
Remove reasons, predictions and opinions that are not shown. Check calculations and avoid turning equal percentages into equal quantities without totals.
Does each paragraph have a clear reason to exist?
Related categories should sit together. If your paragraphs merely follow the order of the legend, reorganise them around larger and smaller shares, direction of change or another visible relationship.
